Facebook, the WhatsApp parent company has finally revealed a new safety feature for iOS users. WhatsApp chat backup on iCloud will very soon gain end-to-end encryption. Up until now, only chat messages on the platform were end-to-end encrypted where WhatsApp apparently has no access whatsoever but cloud backup security was in question.

Meaning, iCloud could technically have access to the backup as there wasn’t any sort of end-to-end protection layer. Today’s development takes things up a notch higher where neither WhatsApp nor the cloud service partner can ever access the backup.

WhatsApp claims to be the only leading messaging service to offer both end-to-end encrypted messaging and cloud backup solutions. Development was quite a challenge, emphasizes the instant messaging company as an entirely new framework was built for key and cloud storage on both iOS and Android. Speaking of which, this new security update will roll out to users in the coming weeks.

Finally, after years and years of requests from users across platforms, WhatsApp is gearing up to bring something to make things seamless and intuitive. The Facebook-owned instant message service will soon allow users to transfer their chat history between iOS and Android.

As reported by WABetaInfo, a one-stop source for everything WhatsApp, also, to be able to migrate the data, either device has to have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. The following screenshot shows the prompt that will appear if WhatsApp is not up-to-date, hindering the ability to transfer the data. By data we believe along with all of the chat history, the call logs and other settings will also be included in the migration process. This feature is still in development and its rollout is not known as of yet.

At the moment, WhatsApp chat history and data are all backed up to iCloud on iPhone. Speaking of which, Apple by default provides a measly 5GB of free iCloud storage with every new Apple ID, which is not enough today by any stretch of the imagination. Upon backup of photos and other info on-device, there is hardly any space left for WhatsApp chat backup. We feel Apple has to give out at least 100GB of free basic storage on iCloud. In contrast, Android users enjoy 15GB of free Google Drive storage that can also be used for chat backup.

Last month, the popular Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp revealed multi-device functionality. The feature as of now is part of the WhatsApp beta program available to enrolled beta users. To join the beta, open WhatsApp > Settings tab > Linked Devices > Multi-Device Beta. As the name suggests, the feature allows you to use WhatsApp on up to four companion devices at a time.

Before you ask, yes, this feature is a much-needed enhancement to the existing WhatsApp web feature where you could only connect to one companion device at one time, Not only that, you always needed your main device that is your phone to be connected and nearby.

However, with the debut of the multi-device feature, you no longer need your phone nearby, you just link it to the companion device of your choice and use all of them independently for up to 14 days before relinking the connection with your iPhone.

Now, building upon this, WhatsApp is developing multi-device 2.0 where Apple’s iPad is added to the mix as per WABetaInfo. To makes things sweeter, the source has clarified that iPadOS will actually get a dedicated WhatsApp instead of a web app as part of the new multi-device 2.0 feature.

The iPadOS app will be able to work independently provided you first link it via the main device that is your iPhone as usual. On that note, Android users can now expect support for Android tablets soon.

Please be aware that multi-device functionality is still available for WhatsApp for iPhone beta users out there and that the 2.0 version of the same will only be available to beta users upon launch.
