Finally, after years and years of requests from users across platforms, WhatsApp is gearing up to bring something to make things seamless and intuitive. The Facebook-owned instant message service will soon allow users to transfer their chat history between iOS and Android.

As reported by WABetaInfo, a one-stop source for everything WhatsApp, also, to be able to migrate the data, either device has to have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. The following screenshot shows the prompt that will appear if WhatsApp is not up-to-date, hindering the ability to transfer the data. By data we believe along with all of the chat history, the call logs and other settings will also be included in the migration process. This feature is still in development and its rollout is not known as of yet.

At the moment, WhatsApp chat history and data are all backed up to iCloud on iPhone. Speaking of which, Apple by default provides a measly 5GB of free iCloud storage with every new Apple ID, which is not enough today by any stretch of the imagination. Upon backup of photos and other info on-device, there is hardly any space left for WhatsApp chat backup. We feel Apple has to give out at least 100GB of free basic storage on iCloud. In contrast, Android users enjoy 15GB of free Google Drive storage that can also be used for chat backup.

Ever since the very beginning of iOS in 2007 (then iPhone OS), Apple has always stuck on to a white background throughout the user interface. Competing platforms notably, the now-defunct Windows Phone offered a dark mode feature way back in 2010.

It was upon years and years of requests from users and inspiration from the jailbreak community that Apple finally implemented dark mode starting iOS 13 just over a year ago.

With that said, let’s take a look at how to set up and configure dark mode on iPhone and iPad running iOS 13 and higher. Dark mode turns the background from white to black and dark gray for easy night viewing. Every default and almost all third-party apps support dark mode. Folders get darker and wallpaper dims down ever so slightly.

Configure dark mode on iPhone and iPad (iOS 13 and later)

1. Launch the Settings app.

2. Tap Display & Brightness.

3. Next up, you’ll see two options namely Light and Dark. Tap either of them to switch from light to dark and vice-versa.

You can also enable dark mode automatically as per your preferred time, say 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM and from sunset to sunrise. All you have to do is toggle the Automatic switch, tap on Options and choose Sunset to Sunrise or Custom Schedule.

Enable dark mode via the Control Center

The dark/light mode button can also be accessed directly from the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad.

1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen (on iPad/iPhone X, XS, XR,11, and 12) or swipe up from the bottom of the screen (iPhone 6S, 7, 8, and SE 2) to access the Control Center.

2. 3D Touch or Haptic Touch (long press) the brightness slider and tap the Dark Mode button as shown below.

Apple jumped into the widgets bandwagon with the introduction of iOS 14 last year. In contrast, Android has had the same baked into the system over a decade ago. And yes, Windows Phone too had Tiles of which iOS widgets resemble more, which according to us were much better and livelier than in Android. However, the defining feature of Android often got overlooked over time, similar to 3D Touch on previous iPhones.

Anyways, getting back on track, the way the folks over at Cupertino implemented the widget concept is great but only visually. If we look beyond all of the glitters and golds of it, we get to see why this very feature needs a lot of work. This takes us to three reasons why widgets in iOS are a beautiful mess.

Icons can’t be expanded to form widgets

3D/Haptic Touch on an icon and you get no options to expand the same to form widgets Small size option in Windows Phone | Source: GSMArena

Having used a Windows Phone for a few years, we can vouch for how great its Tiles were. For those uninformed, Tiles were basically live widgets that were dynamic and displayed up-to-date info right on the home screen. You could resize it in small, medium, and large forms. In its smallest form, it was just an icon sans live information. Want more info? Just resize the very same icon to medium or large and you get dynamic tiles showing you live information right on spot.

And this is where iOS falls short with no way whatsoever to expand icons to form widgets right from the home screen rather going the long way to adding one by navigating to the home screen widgets settings. Is iOS getting convoluted over time? Who knows.

Resizing widget is unintuitive

Editing the Calendar widget No resize option available in options Large size option in Windows Phone | Source: GSMArena Medium size option in Windows Phone | Source: GSMArena

Most if not all widgets in iOS 14 are available in at least three different sizes. Now if you want to resize, for example, let’s take the calendar app here, you can’t long-press the app right on the spot. Again, the situation is similar to the widget expansion capability, you will eventually have to go to the widget library by long-pressing the home screen and tapping the + button at the top-right corner. Take a look.

Stack rotation and widget update issues

At least on our iPhone SE 2020 running the latest iOS 14.4 (as of writing this article), the widgets seem to have a hard time updating relevant information on time. Not only that, stacks on the other hand do not rotate at all on our device. For those unaware as of yet, stack as the word implies is a feature that allows you to drop a widget over another to form a Rolodex (vertically scrollable widget stack). Do watch the video below to learn how to create a stack.

Wrapping up, We hope Apple brings in new features and fix all of the issues in iOS 15. what are your thoughts about widgets in iOS? Feel free to chime in the comments section and do share your experience. Thank you for reading.

We know, we know, you all have heard, seen, and experienced the ever so annoying iPhone behavior for eternity. The infamous and dreaded ‘Other’ storage on iOS devices has long frustrated and put users in despair. You see, over time as your iPhone fills up with a lot of photos, media, files, and more, residual files and cache start to build up in the system. For example, Safari eventually stores cookies, cache, and temporary files as time goes on. Also, apps installed have residual files collected in the storage system.

Taking into account all of the aforementioned reasons, the ‘Other’ storage fills the device ultimately going north of 8GB eventually bothering the user. Now, this takes us to the part of solving the annoyance. Although deleting old files, clearing Safari cache and browsing data, unused apps could bring down the space consumed by ‘Other’, there is one and only one single solution to get away from this. So, let’s see how to completely delete ‘Other’ storage from iPhone.

Reset iPhone Settings and clear Other storage

IMPORTANT: Although self-explanatory, always make sure to back up your device before performing a reset. Connect your iPhone to your PC/Mac and back up via iTunes.

  1. Go to Settings, tap General and scroll down to select Reset.
  2. Select Reset All Settings (DO NOT tap Reset All Content and Settings) and enter your iPhone passcode.
  3. Tap the Reset All Settings confirmation dialog.

Your iPhone will reset its settings to default values: home screen layout, network, Touch ID and Passcode settings, and more. The data on your iPhone does not get erased and stays intact.

And there you go, post resetting your iPhone settings, jump into Settings > General > iPhone Storage and scroll all the way to the bottom to make sure the Other storage has shrunk to Zero KB.

Microblogging platform Twitter is officially testing an in-app YouTube player on iOS. Twitter’s support team tweeted about the upcoming feature on Thursday. This feature will provide users with the ability to watch youtube video link directly on their timeline. Just hit the play button on a tweet that has the YouTube link embedded. Currently, to watch a YouTube video, one has to tap the youtu.be link of a given video which then launches the web version of YouTube within the Twitter app itself.

Now, this welcome change aims to make the experience simpler and intuitive for all iOS users. Take a look at the feature Twitter’s cooking. Also, Twitter’s working on bringing the ability to upload and view 4K images both on iOS and Android.
