Clicking the link in the tweet takes one to the landing page to be able to sign up to know about the “upcoming big announcement”. This year Apple has taken things up a notch as they are eliminating the plastic wrap that keeps the iPhone box safe, tamper-free, and secure during shipping. As per a tweet by DuanRui, the new seal for the iPhone 13 series is a simple tear-tab.

A new secure paper seal has to be torn off to open the box

Replacing the wrapper is a paper tab seal that you would have to tear off to open the iPhone box. We were a bit on the fence about the seal here but it seems like the paper tab is strongly glued to the lid of the box, preventing the contents from falling off, should the lid open. Also, the new seal serves as solid evidence with regards to the authenticity as to whether the box has been opened before or not.

According to Apple, going plastic-wrap-free helps them rule out 600 metric tons of plastic and aim to go the plastic-free route on all of its sales packages by the year 2025.

Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13

3005 iPhone users were taken into account for this survey and there are some interesting findings here. 18.3% of users (1 in 5 users) expressed their distaste for the iPhone 13 moniker. Men at 24.9% and 11.7% of women are triskaidekaphobic (men are nearly twice as likely to be affected) and would just steer away from the number 13. However, 81.7% of fans do not seem to have any problem and wouldn’t mind changing their next iPhone purchase plans.

The next iPhone should be called?

26% of 3005 users said It’s better if Apple stuck to the usual naming scheme for iPhone models. Meanwhile, the next iPhone lineup should be simply called iPhone (2021), suggest 38% of the surveyed users aiming to bring in a consistent naming scheme to better match up to the MacBook line and iPad range. Interestingly, 16% feel Apple should instead follow Samsung’s footsteps in naming their next iPhone lineup as iPhone 21.

The good old S moniker…

The iPhone XS and XS Max were the last iPhone models to sport an S moniker a few years ago. The S in the name indicated an interactive upgrade as opposed to a full-fledged revamp of sorts. That brings us to what 13% of iPhone users feel about. They are of the opinion that Apple has to restart their S suffix for their next-generation iPhone calling it the iPhone 12S.

Nevermind, let’s skip this year

Whatever this year’s iPhone is purported to be called, 7% of the 3000 users said they would rather altogether skip this year and hop on to the iPhone 14 in 2022.

First discovered by 9to5Mac, a quick rundown at the iPhone 13 specifications page on Apple’s website reveals the new feature addition. Speaking of which, users can still use a physical SIM + eSIM combo if they prefer the old way. It’s just that Apple has made carrier-bound iPhone 13 activations (especially in the US) easy as the same will not come bundled with an actual SIM like it was in the past. All in all, this is a welcome feature set from the Cupertino giant.

As a heads up, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro will be up for pre-order from September 17 with shipments slated for September 24. The Worldwide rollout will be completed in the coming weeks.

An image by DuanRui sourced from Weibo has it that the iPhone 13 Pro Max appears to support a peak charging rate at 27W apparently. The picture has the iPhone connected to a multimeter and measured as to how much max current it can receive when used with a 30W brick. If this is all true, users can buy a 30W charger and top up their shiny new iPhone 13 Pro to enjoy maximum charging speed.

As for the regular iPhone 13 models, we cannot confirm at this point whether the devices support peak 27W charging. At the same time, we also can’t think of a reason why the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini would be left out here.

For comparison, the iPhone 12 Pro Max from last year came with a 2,815mAh cell, and now we can see the 15% improvement this year indeed. The new L-shaped battery of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is manufactured by Huizhou Desay Battery Co., Ltd. The internals has been neatly arranged this time with the A15 Bionic proudly printed on the chipset. The face ID sensor has gotten smaller and has been redone.

As for the iPhone 13, a 3227mAh (12.41 Wh) at 3.84V unit made by Sunwoda Electronic Co., Ltd is seated inside. A new square-shaped Taptic Engine and the prominently labeled A15 Bionic chipset can be seen here. The smaller Face ID module helped reduce the size of the notch.

As for the internals, we can’t help but applaud Apple for such a neat arrangement inside. Also worthy of mention is how Apple actually makes screen repair and battery replacement easy. Just remove the two Pentalobe screws and take off the screen. Anyways, the smaller Face ID module, logic boards, and better shielding of components are noticeable here.

Third-party repairs are not an Apple thing entirely!

In contrast to the easy display and battery swap experience, third-party replacement parts do bring up the usual Apple non-genuine part warning in settings. Does this all defeat the easiness here? A definite YES. We really hope Apple comes in support of the right to third-party repair to better improve customer experience and that’s only actually going to reduce e-waste.

With that being said, iFixit too recently did a live teardown of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The disassembly put light on a possible battery repair. Swapping the battery on the iPhone 13 Pro Max with another genuine Apple unit threw up the “Important Battery Message” saying “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery”. This isn’t a user-friendly approach on Apple’s part and just makes things more convoluted to the end-user.

Speaking of which, a photo from @1nsane_dev  is doing the rounds on Twitter showcasing the rearranged guts of the iPhone 13 in full glory.

Apple at the California streaming event reasoned the switch to a diagonal camera layout for the iPhone 13 line to be the improved sensor-shift stabilized camera sensors requiring the internals to be rearranged. As you can see, things have been organized much better this time making the interior of the phone look cleaner and nicer compared to the iPhone 12.

Things have been neatly and smartly arranged to accommodate the larger battery and upgraded camera system. Towards the right, we have the new large battery with the motherboard to the left and the also notice the A15 Bionic chipset here. The smaller Face ID module sits at the top with all of the flex cables shielded out below the same. The great Tapric Engine also got a size reduction as well.

And yes, nobody really cares about how the innards of a phone look like but Apple has gone the extra mile as usual with immaculate attention to detail and that is nothing short of impressive.

Moving on, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini are what we would like to call incremental updates over the previous generation. Yes, we get the same 6.1″ and 5.4″ Super Retina XDR OLED on both models. Speaking of which, the notch footprint has been reduced to better make use of space and the earpiece has been moved towards the rim of both devices.

Coming to the guts, the fastest chip ever in a smartphone, the A15 Bionic is here, built on the impressive 5nm process again. Hexa-core graphics are onboard for unparalleled visual performance. Storage this year starts at 128GB all the way up to 512GB on both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Goodbye to the preciously good old 64GB! Onboard memory is 6GB. On that noted iOS, 15 boots up the show, and yes improved 5G is onboard.

Flipping things around, a much improved dual-camera system is seated at the back of the devices. The basic design is fairly the same with only the camera units have been arranged diagonally this time around as opposed to a stack arrangement. Both the main wide and ultrawide cameras are 12MP in resolution. However, sensor-shift stabilization from the iPhone 12 Pro Max has made it to the iPhone 13 and 13 mini for great low-light stills and crispier videos.

What’s even more interesting and the star of the show here is the Cinematic mode. The new feature brings the cinema-style portrait to video enabling one to record video of the subjects with a depth effect and automatically change the focus. This is seriously impressive for what a smartphone camera can achieve.

As for battery life, as per Apple, the iPhone 13 is set to last 2.5 hrs more than the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 mini brings in 1.5 hrs better battery endurance than its predecessor. Pre-orders will start September 16 and the devices will be available on September 24. The lineup will come in Pink, Blue, Starlight, Black, and PRODUCT (RED) finishes.
