Cupertino giant, Apple silently released the MagSafe Battery Pack. The battery pack as pointed out by 9to5Mac first is 1460mAh in capacity (zoom in to the second picture below and notice carefully). It provides 5W of output to the iPhone.

The MagSafe Battery Pack can also wirelessly charge your iPhone at up to 15W provided you connect a 20W or higher wall adaptor to the Battery Pack. The charging status will be available on the lock screen, home screen, and Batteries widget.

Neither is a 20W charger nor a Lightning to USB-C cable come bundled with the new MagSafe Battery Pack. Those have to be bought separately if required. Your iPhone 12 series has to be running iOS 14.7 and later to use the new Apple MagSafe Battery Pack.

Even though there are a plethora of MagSafe compliant wireless charging iPhone battery packs available for the iPhone 12 series, Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack is the only wireless charging battery pack that’s actually officially MagSafe-approved as of now.

MagSafe, now wireless

With the introduction of the iPhone 12 lineup, Apple brought back the good old MagSafe albeit in a mobile-friendly form and shape. As in, it is now a wireless charging system integrated into the new iPhones. It takes the Qi wireless charging coil and adds magnets to it. This way it helps the iPhone to properly attach to a wireless charger. Apple has also a few accessories to take advantage of this new system. From the likes of wallets, cases to the MagSafe charger.

Basically, you just slap the MagSafe wallet or case onto the back of your iPhone and enjoy uninterrupted wireless charging. The accessories are designed to work with the MagSafe charger to align with the iPhone securely and charge. This isn’t the case with most third-party covers or cases.

The power brick is to be bought in addition!

The MagSafe Duo brings along with it a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box and that’s about it. You will have to buy a spare power adaptor to make use of the new wireless charger from Apple as is the case with new iPhones since the launch of the iPhone 12. That said, a 27W USB-C power brick from Apple gives up to 14W of power. A 20W adaptor lowers it down to 11W.

That said, we absolutely loathe the trillion-dollar company’s decision to stop bundling chargers in the box. An unexpected move from such a renowned brand as Apple. On that note, it is speculated that other manufacturers namely Samsung may ditch the power adaptor in 2021 with the introduction of the much anticipated Galaxy S21 range.

Apple finally released iOS 14.7 for the iPhone on Monday. The update brings a host of new features and fixes. The noticeable feature addition among them is the support for Apple MagSafe Battery Pack that was announced last week. This new accessory charges your iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max battery while on the go.

Speaking of which, this possibly paves way for reverse wireless charging to debut in the iPhone 13 this year. Anyways, to update your iPhone, head over to Settings > General > Software Update and check for the iOS 14.7 version. The release notes for the update are outlined below for your reference.

iOS 14.7 official release notes:

  • MagSafe Battery Pack support for iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • Apple Card Family adds the option to combine credit limits and share one co-owned account with an existing Apple Card user
  • The Home app adds the ability to manage timers on HomePod
  • Air quality information is now available in Weather and Maps for Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea, and Spain
  • Podcasts library allows you to choose to see all shows or only followed shows
  • Share playlist menu option missing in Apple Music
  • Dolby Atmos and Apple Music lossless audio playback may unexpectedly stop
  • Battery service message that may have disappeared after reboot on some iPhone 11 models is restored
  • Braille displays could show invalid information while composing Mail messages

The update weighs 926.3 on our iPhone 11. Do chime in the comments section below about your experience with iOS 14.7 on your iPhone. On that note, quite strangely, we haven’t received iPadOS 14.7 on our 2021 iPad Pro M1 (11″). Let’s wait and watch, we’ll keep a tab on that.
