Nothing was founded by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei not too long ago and their first product is already here. The $99 (₹5,999) Nothing Ear 1 is a pair of TWS earphones with a unique design and commendable feature set. The earphones carry a transparent design which helps showcase its internals in full glory. And yes, the charging case is also getting transparent treatment.

The Ear 1 is co-created and tuned by Teenage Engineering. The earbuds feature an 11.6mm driver. Speaking of which, up to 40db Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is on board along with Transparency and normal modes. Three microphones are present to keep you sounding crystal clear during calls using advanced algorithms to keep out wind and unwanted background noise.

We think the Ear 1 to be quite an alternative to the AirPods Pro at least when the price is taken into consideration.

The Nothing Ear 1 is IPX4 certified for splash and sweat resistance. Each earbud weighs 4.7g which is a perfect balance in our opinion and features pressure-relieving vents for optimum comfort. Nothing provides three ear tip sizes for the best fit possible. The Ear 1 can provide listening time for up to 5 hours and when combined with the charging case, you can expect 34 hours of battery life.

The Ear (1) app is available on iOS helping users manage and customize their earbuds. The Android app is also available and as a bonus for Android users, the earbuds support Google Fast Pair enabling instant pair and play. The Ear 1 will be available in limited quantities on Nothing’s website starting July 31. A full-fledged rollout will begin on August 17. In India, the Ear 1 will be a Flipkart-exclusive device.

Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi unveiled their Mi 11 Pro and Ultra flagship devices at a launch event in China today. Along with the high-end smartphones, the company also introduced an Apple AirPower-like wireless charging pad. Unless you’re living under a rock, you may have seen Apple’s multi-device wireless charger, the AirPower a few years ago in 2017.

Since its introduction at the iPhone 8/X launch event, the AirPower never made it to reality. After nearly two years in 2019, AirPower was canceled. Apple reasoned that the device was unable to meet its own quality standards. Since its inception, Apple takes quality and reliability very seriously for the best user experience (the Butterfly Keyboard being an exception!). Take a look at the canceled AirPower first and then let’s jump on to Xiaomi’s clone of the same.

As you can see from the pictures above, Xiaomi’s Apple AirPower clone (the shape here is less-rounded though) can charge up to 3 devices at a time. As per Xiaomi, the wireless charger provides an output of 60W with up to 20W available for each device. There are 19 coils built into the wireless charger which allows devices to be charged by placing them anywhere on the pad. There is no need to adjust your devices unlike conventional wireless chargers out there. You’ll be able to charge any Qi-certified device (except the Apple Watch) by resting it on this pad.

Xiaomi claims to have worked for two years on this wireless charger and feels confident that they have been able to iron out the overheating issue. And yes, this was apparently the main reason why Apple shelved the AirPower. On that note, only time will tell how well Xiaomi’s new AirPower clone will fare for such a challenging piece of tech.

This multi-coiled Xiaomi wireless charging pad will set you back just $91, which is really impressive considering the capabilities on offer here.

Smart tracking devices aren’t anything new or breathtaking at this point in time as we’ve seen several companies have outed one. By joining the bandwagon, Apple has introduced its AirTag accessory to help locate your devices and belongings easily via the Find My app on your iPhone or other Apple devices.

The AirTag is a small and lightweight round puck-like device that attaches onto or slips right into your bag, luggage, or any other belongings. Just bring the AirTag near to the iPhone and that’s it, it’s paired! The Find My app comes to play here to help locate current or last known location. A sound can also be played to help find it provided it is in the Bluetooth range. The device is IP67 certified for dust and water resistance.

Source: Apple

AirTag employs the Apple U1 chip with Ultra-wideband technology and this helps to find your stuff with the Precision Finding feature. This feature is exclusive to iPhone 11 and 12 devices that have the U1 chip in them. It allows the user to locate his belongings by determining the exact distance and direction of the AirTag. As the user moves, the camera, the accelerometer will guide the user towards the AirTag by providing sound, haptics, and visual feedback. A simple coin-sized watch battery (CR2032) is used to power up the AirTag.

A lost Airtag is out of the Bluetooth coverage area, the user can go to the Find My network and place it in Lost mode and locate it from anywhere provided the person that comes across the AirTag has an iPhone 11 or 12 featuring the U1 chip. The AirTag can simply be placed inside your bag, purse or you can opt for keychain accessories designed to attach the tag to your devices and personal belongings.

An AirTag will set you back $29, however, Apple is offering a bundle with 4 AirTags for $99. It will be available starting April 30.

Apple has now started selling the MagSafe Duo Charger. As the name suggests, this one doubles down on the already available MagSafe Charger introduced alongside iPhone 12 series last Keynote. The MagSafe Duo for $129 gives users the ability to charge their iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. All you have to do is seat your devices on the charger and magnets take care of the rest. The charger is foldable too providing portability on the go.

MagSafe, now wireless

With the introduction of the iPhone 12 lineup, Apple brought back the good old MagSafe albeit in a mobile-friendly form and shape. As in, it is now a wireless charging system integrated into the new iPhones. It takes the Qi wireless charging coil and adds magnets to it. This way it helps the iPhone to properly attach to a wireless charger. Apple has also a few accessories to take advantage of this new system. From the likes of wallets, cases to the MagSafe charger.

Basically, you just slap the MagSafe wallet or case onto the back of your iPhone and enjoy uninterrupted wireless charging. The accessories are designed to work with the MagSafe charger to align with the iPhone securely and charge. This isn’t the case with most third-party covers or cases.

The power brick is to be bought in addition!

The MagSafe Duo brings along with it a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box and that’s about it. You will have to buy a spare power adaptor to make use of the new wireless charger from Apple as is the case with new iPhones since the launch of the iPhone 12. That said, a 27W USB-C power brick from Apple gives up to 14W of power. A 20W adaptor lowers it down to 11W.

That said, we absolutely loathe the trillion-dollar company’s decision to stop bundling chargers in the box. An unexpected move from such a renowned brand as Apple. On that note, it is speculated that other manufacturers namely Samsung may ditch the power adaptor in 2021 with the introduction of the much anticipated Galaxy S21 range.

The Cupertino giant Apple hasn’t yet given a successor to the AirPods 2 as of yet. Speaking of which, a report from TheElec has brought out some interesting tidbits. As in, an AirPods Pro Lite (AirPods Lite) is on the way for the first half of 2021. Going by the tentative name, for now, the earbuds will be a slightly watered-down variant of the premium Airpods Pro. Yes, we expect to see the same in-ear design and overall shape.

However, the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) feature is not going to make it to the AirPods Pro Lite. We would like to call it the AirPods 3 to keep it simple. On that note, Apple recently introduced an even more premium AirPods Max to finally jump into the headphones territory.

AirPods Pro | Source: Apple

According to industry sources, The new Airpods will come with a new square-shaped SiP (System-in-Package) with Apple’s H1 audio chip integrated into it. Currently, a rounded SiP exists in the AirPods. The production of the new SiP will take place next year with quality verification and certification to be completed before the end of 2020.

Upon launch, the upcoming AirPods is slated to be 20% cheaper than the AirPods Pro due to the lack of ANC. Not everybody is quite comfortable with ANC and they may not bother about the feature altogether. This in turn translates to a price of $199 compared to the $249 AirPods Pro.

Apple was expected to out the Lite version of the AirPods Pro after its launch. However, the demand for the same exceeded the company’s expectations, eventually leading to a change in plans at Cupertino. And taking things into perspective at the very moment, Apple is geared towards conquering the wireless audio accessory segment especially considering the competition has brought out more for less.

What do you all think of a Lite variant of the AirPods Pro? Chime in the comments section to get talking. Thank you for reading.

The AirPods 3 has at last taken shape. The third-gen AirPods from Apple brings updated design, spatial Audio, better battery among others.

3. Battery, charging, and price

Design

First things first, that is the design. In line with the heavy rumors, the AirPods 3 looks like a baby AirPods Pro sans the silicone ear tips to be fair enough. Our first impressions are that the AirPods 3 is more like an evolution of the previous AirPods but in the absolute right direction. The stem has been shortened and overall it bears a resemblance to the AirPods Pro.

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/videos/airpods-3rd-gen-internal/large_2x.mp4

Having said that, the Force Touch sensors have been carried over from the Pro sibling which is nice. For clumsy folks, the IPX4 water resistance certification is here. We expected an IP55 rating at least but it’s still better than nothing. To make the deal even sweeter, the charging case is also IPX4 certified.

Upgraded Sound

This year, the AirPods focuses on delivering amazing sound quality based on ear fitment for the best possible audio experience. This is done by the Adaptive EQ feature that tunes the sound in real-time with regard to different types of ears. The low and mid frequencies are tuned intelligently to make up for the variances of fit among different users.

And then there’s Spatial Audio bringing an immersive sound that tracks the user’s head movement complete with Dolby Atmos.

A new skin detection sensor detects if the AirPods 3 are in the ear or not to pause or play media accordingly. Beam-forming microphones cancel out background noise and keep the user’s voice crisp and clear.

Battery, charging, and price

As for the battery, the AirPods 3 gets a larger battery with up to 6 hours of listening time and 30 hours combined with the charging case. Speaking of which, MagSafe now makes its way to the AirPods case along with conventional wireless charging as usual. With that said, the earbuds on an hour of charge can provide up to 1 hour of listening time.

The AirPods 3 is up for order at the Apple Store for $179 with sales set to begin next week. As for the lineup, the AirPods 2 stays as the entry-level offering with the AirPods Pro being the top-of-the-line TWS until a sequel drops sometime next year.
