As you can see from the pictures above, the iPad mini 6 will feature a design with flat sides very much like Apple’s recent tablets and iPhone lineup. The camera and flash arrangement mimics that of the 2020 iPad Air. Turning to the sides, we can see the flat design with the volume buttons and what appears to be the rumored Touch ID-enabled power button.

That said, a Face ID system is out of scope here. As for the screen, we can see symmetrical bezels throughout the front-fascia. By the looks of it, an 8.5″ display may make it to reality. Having said that, a mini-LED display may embrace the iPad mini 6 eventually.

Coming to the internals, Apple will most likely equip the A15 chipset that’s set to debut across the iPhone 13 lineup very soon. As tempting as it is, we don’t feel the possibility of the Apple M1 chip being featured in the iPad mini 6.

An 8.3″ 120Hz display panel manufactured by Samsung will supposedly be employed in the upcoming new iPad mini iteration. Having said that, upon launch, we saw the current iPad mini 6 exhibit jelly scrolling during an iFixit teardown. For starters, jelly scrolling is a jelly-like effect that occurs when one half of the display refreshes slower than the other.

Coming back to the rumored iPad mini 6 Pro or whatever, the memory onboard is expected to be a 4GB unit. Storage capacity will start from 128GB and the processing department will be managed by the A15 Bionic supposedly clocked at 3.23GHz.

Connectivity

Right off the bar, the iPad Air 5 embraces 5G network connectivity for a faster internet experience. Then we have the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 2x faster USB-C port for charging and data transfers.

Design

Everything in the design department is nothing more than a carry-over from the previous-gen model. Touch ID is still wonderfully integrated into the power button. We wished if Face ID made its way to the iPad Air 5 but anyway it isn’t a deal-breaker of any sorts.

Storage, crazy performance

Once again much like the last-gen model, the new iPad Air 2021 storage capacity starts at 64GB with 256GB being the only other option. RAM is believed to be 4GB but we expected a 6GB version at least. As for the performance, Apple’s striking M1 chipset is employed to keep the iPad Air 5 churning out demanding tasks. The 8-core CPU is 60x faster than the A14 on the outgoing model.

Display and camera

The same bezel-less 10.9″ Liquid Retina display is here with the exact same resolution and pixel density. True Tone technology is here as usual along with support for Apple Pencil 2.

Photography is handled by a 12MP single camera system with support to 4K 60fps video recording. Upfront, a 12MP camera takes care of selfies complete with Centre Stage feature.

Price, colors, and availability

Available in Starlight, Stunning New Blue, Purple, Space Gray, and pink color options, the iPad Air 5 retails for $599 (Wi-Fi) and $749 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) and will go on for pre-order on March 11. It will hit the shelves on March 18.

As you can see, Dieter’s iPad mini 6 showcased the weird scrolling behavior when captured frame by frame in slow motion. He noted that the effect was noticeable intermittently and that too only in portrait orientation. Using the device in landscape mode, the issue did not persist.

The popular tech portal, Ars Technica, reached out to Apple for an explanation regarding the issue. Apple responded to their inquiry by reasoning the scrolling effect as normal on all LCD screens.

In response to our inquiry, Apple has told us that the “jelly scroll” issue on the 6th-generation iPad mini is normal behavior for LCD screens. Because these screens do refresh line by line, there is a tiny delay between when the lines at the top of the screen and lines at the bottom are refreshed. This can cause uneven scrolling issues like the ones observed on the iPad.

In addition to all this, Ars Technica noticed that the scrolling effect wasn’t noticeable on the iPad Air 4 and the 9th gen iPad as much as on the iPad mini 6. This makes us believe that Apple isn’t going to provide a replacement to all of them who expected to get one anyway.

The teardown experts, iFixit disassembled the iPad mini 6 and came with their findings. It turns out, the driver of the display is positioned vertically, with respect to how one would hold their phone or tablet. The display refreshes in parallel to the driver placement. As in, here, refresh happens horizontally which leads to jelly scrolling when viewed in portrait orientation.

On the other hand, the iPad Air 4 has a display driver that is horizontally mounted causing jelly scrolling when viewing in landscape mode. iFixit also brought up the iPad Pro for comparison which also has the display driver placed like that of the iPad mini 6. The effect here was hard to notice (although persistent) due to the refresh rate being 120Hz as opposed to 60Hz.

iFixit believes Apple may have used a cheaper quality display on the iPad mini 6 which further showcases jelly scrolling than normal.

The teardown noted the easy removal of the USB-C port. However, the battery, speaker, and display all use adhesives in full glory making repairs a tough job. Speaking of which, iFixit gave the iPad mini 6 a lowly 3/10 repairability score. Check it out below.

The case is Speck’s Balance FOLIO. Anyways, as you all know, Apple has an 11″ iPad Pro (2018 and 2020) currently in the lineup and also the iPad Air 2020 with a 10.9″ screen. So, quite naturally, the folio cover will definitely fit the two iPad models, and that’s mentioned on the box, which isn’t the thing here.

The cherry on the cake, to top it all up, is that it is also explicitly mentioned on the very same box that the cover fits a “NEW iPAD 11″ (2021)”. Which means, we may get to witness a new 9th Gen 2021 iPad with an 11-inch display this year (March 23, perhaps? more on that below). March 23 Apple event, likely to happen?

Strangely, also as per the user on Reddit, when he apparently had attempted to buy the cover, the system threw an error back at him. The error goes like “This item can’t be sold until 4/06”. And that clears the picture here and cements the fact (not really, or does it so? who knows!) that Apple may be preparing an update to the current vanilla iPad and a March launch (we’ll get to it in a bit) may be in cards.

To further back this, he claims that an employee over at Target had told him that the product wasn’t intended or supposed to be on the shelves yet. Also, we expect Apple to release the final version of iOS 14.5 on the same day as the March event or a day earlier. On that note, Apple outed iOS 14.4.1 on Monday with a critical and very important security patch and we urge our viewers to update their eligible devices immediately.

Anyways, speaking of this very information, we on the other hand are expecting Apple to conduct an event on March 23. As reported by renowned Apple leaker, Jon Prosser, the Cupertino giant is expected to introduce a myriad of products later this month. From the likes of an iPad Pro 2021, AirPods, a new Apple TV, and a 3rd gen AirPods or an update to the AirPods Pro.

Speaking of which, OnePlus is scheduled to launch the OnePlus 9 series on March 23 and so if we can take all of the speculations, we may get to see a clash here. When held in the proper portrait orientation, the volume control buttons on the new iPad mini 6 are located at the top left-hand side. In contrast, all other iPads do have volume buttons on the right-hand side. The change here by Apple was done to accommodate the magnetic Apple Pencil 2 concerning the size of the iPad mini 6. Regardless of the orientation, the iPad is held, the volume buttons adapt themselves automatically on iPadOS 15.

For the sake of convenience, there are four types of keyboard layouts available in iPadOS 15 on iPad mini 2021. There is the typical; a full-size keyboard, a split keyboard, undocked keyboard (which is a full-size one but without being stuck at the bottom of the screen for ease of use), and a floating keyboard. To access the types of keyboard layout, tap and hold the hide keyboard button located at the bottom right of the keyboard (besides the “123” button).

Silent mode

Unlike iPhone where we do get a silent mode toggle switch above the volume buttons to silence notifications and calls, the iPad never was equipped with one ever. However, if you wish to silence notifications on your iPad mini, simply go to the Control Center and tap the bell icon.

As the iPad is mostly used for media, gaming, work on the go, and social media consumption, the need to deal with calls (unless you buy the cellular variant) doesn’t arise at all.

Barring the size, the iPad mini has a more pixel-dense display and again a manageable overall footprint.
