Apple‘s next big software-centric launch event is near, just one full week away. WWDC21 starts on June 7 at 5 PM (GMT). So stay tuned for the full coverage on everything that’s to come especially and more importantly iOS 15, the company’s next major OS update. Speaking of which, we have come up with 5 improvements and features Apple should bring to the table with iOS 15. Without further ado, let’s get to it.

Redesigned notifications system

There’s no shying around the fact that the current notification center on iOS is totally chaotic, for a lack of a better word! Sure we do have grouped notifications and a visually pleasing design to back up, however, the organization of items isn’t the best out there when compared to the rival Android where notifications are stacked much more neatly and logically conceptualized.

In-app Settings and preferences

This one has been on our wishlist for almost a decade now. You see ever since its inception, iOS has been burying every official and third-party app settings and preferences towards the bottom section of the Settings app. This behavior is nothing short of frustrating considering how well-tuned iOS is for usability. As a prime example, let’s take the Camera app for instance, where changing main camera preferences requires one to jump to the Settings app to make required changes. However, thankfully, Apple since the iPhone 11, Apple baked in the video resolution setting right onto the top bar of the Camera app.

Interactive widgets

Home screen widgets were introduced in iOS 14 last year. Although it bought with it some nice dynamic information right in the forefront. However, the widgets aren’t interactive in any way, say, for example, the ability to control audio playback, scrollable info, browse social media feeds, and more. Also, we wish if Apple adds the ability to expand icons to form widgets and vice versa.

improved multitasking with split-screen view

When it comes to memory management, nothing comes close to iOS, all thanks to Apple’s effortless software and hardware integration. The iPhone 8 has just 2GB of RAM and it even today does multitasking in a beat. The maxed-out variant of the iPhone 12 Pro Max features 6GB of RAM but the sheer amount of memory is severely limited by the lack of split-screen multitasking. Combining all this with the large bezel-less display experience further hampers productivity and feels like a not-so-great usage of all the available screen real-estate.

Restyled UI

Source: Apple

iOS has been nearly the same in terms of look and feel (that Weather app though!) ever since the heavy redesign of iOS 7 way back in 2013. Rumors have been making rounds for quite some time now indicating macOS Big Sur-esque icons, ambiance, and overall elements throughout the user interface. We just can’t hold our excitement with regards to this as we feel Big Sur brought freshness to the Mac lineup after so many years and that the look and feel trickling down across other systems would make everything even more cohesive and consistent.

Alright, below is the list of supported and unsupported iPhone models for Apple’s next major iOS 15 software update.

Devices that will have full support for iOS 15

  • iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 and 12 mini
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XS and XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

iOS 15 went live to the general public on Monday. The release comes after over 3 months in the beta stage. Meaning, devices equipped with the A12 Bionic and newer chipsets can enjoy some of the key features of iOS 15. Here they are:

  • On-Device speech recognition and processing: Speech recognition and requests are not processed on-device without an internet connection. All possible with the help of the Neural Engine delivering the same server-based high-quality speech recognition.
  • Panorama pictures (iPhone 12 and newer): Improved geometric distortion and captures moving subjects much better while also reducing image noise and banding.
  • Cinematic mode (iPhone 13 series only): Also called Portrait video, Cinematic mode provides the ability to focus on a subject and seamlessly shift focus to another all while blurring the background using the Rack Focusing technique.

The Public Beta 4 release of iOS 15 is out now. The update includes changes to the Safari browser yet again, a new icon for Notifications in the Settings app, the ability to share the status of your Focus mode with individual contacts, and more.

Along with the changes, we have noticed an improvement in performance and battery life. The iOS 15 Public Beta 4 carries the build number 19A5307g and weighs 1.05GB on our 2020 iPhone SE. To update your iPhone, go to the Settings app > General > Software Update. And now let’s see four of the few prominent changes in iOS 15 Public Beta 4.

What’s new?

  • Apple has added a new refresh button in the address bar right beside the URL. Although the placement seems s too close to the URL, it still is better than nothing. On that note, the button itself is a tad too tiny to be able to tap it comfortably.
  • The three-dot button is now gone and has been replaced by the Share Sheet button. To access the options that were available in the three-dot menu previously, all you have to do is tap and hold the address bar.
  • You can now share your Focus status with your iMessage contacts on an individual basis.
  • Support for the Apple MagSafe Battery Pack for iPhone 12 models.

One of the most prominent new features introduced in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is Live Text. As the name suggests, this brand-new feature provides the user with the ability to select text directly from photos. The fun fact is this functionality is baked right into the Camera app. Apple SVP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi at WWDC21 demonstrated by pointing the iPhone to a notes-filled whiteboard.

The text upon a scan is highlighted in a bracket in the camera viewfinder, tapping the text capture below the viewfinder brings up the text for interaction. The text can be copied, looked upon on the internet, or even translate if required. On that note, we are currently testing the iOS 15 Developer Beta 1 and everything seems pretty stable so far. Refer to the screenshots below.

HOW TO: How to install iOS 15, iPadOS 15 Developer Beta for free

In Photos, tap the Live Text feature to capture the text to copy, lookup, translate, and more. Spotlight now shows pictures with relevant text in them as part of the Live Text feature and on-device intelligence.

One can also make use of Live Text to get phone numbers, addresses, and other vital information. This is especially beneficial in an instance where a promotional brochure of a product can interact within seconds of receiving one. As exciting as the new appears to be, it works only on the iPhone XS and later devices due to the limitations in chipsets prior to the A12 Bionic.

  • Cupertino giant Apple introduced iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 at the WWDC21 event. The update brings in some new features and tweaks as so is more of an evolutionary upgrade this time around. With the new version comes the beta testing phase as usual. Speaking of which, follow this guide on how to register for the Beta Software Program, download and install the first-ever beta of iOS and iPadOS 15.

The Developer Beta along with the Public Beta is available to install now. The Developer Beta requires you to have registered for Apple Developer Program ($99/year). Thankfully, the Public Beta Program is free to sign up for. Speaking of which, you may also install iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Developer Beta without a developer account for free (at your own risk!). Instructions to install the Developer Beta and Public Beta the official way are detailed below.

Back up your iPhone or iPad, first!

This is the first and unavoidable step every user needs to follow before installing a beta release of iOS. We’re pretty confident that you all know how to backup your devices as it’s a self-explanatory process. Yeah! Just connect your iPhone to PC/Mac and fire up iTunes and back up your iPhone as usual.

Sign up for the Apple Developer Program and install the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Developer Beta

    1. Launch Safari on iPhone and go to the Enroll page to get into the Apple Developer program.
    2.  Authenticate with your Apple ID and download the Developer Beta profile and install it by going to Settings > General > Profiles. Select the profile and tap Install.
    3. Go back to Settings > General and select Software Update and check for the iOS 15 Developer Beta.

Sign up for the Public Apple Beta Software Program

    1. Open Safari on your iPhone and go to the Apple Beta Software Program webpage.
    2. Tap Sign Up and you’ll be asked to sign with the Apple ID associated with your iPhone. Confirm authentication with your Face ID/Touch ID.
    3. Accept the software license agreement.
    4. Scroll down to locate and tap enroll your iOS device.
    5. Read the instructions or skip to the Install Profile section and press Download Profile and select Allow.
    6. Go to Settings > General > Profiles to view the iOS 15 Beta Software profile. Tap the profile and select Install. Enter the passcode and restart the device if required.

Install the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Public Beta

Provided you have followed the above steps correctly, open the Settings app and navigate to General > Software Update and install and enjoy the iOS 15 beta software.

Apple brought out the sixth Public Beta of iOS 15 exactly after a week of releasing the fifth iteration of the same. This new beta release includes significant changes and notable performance improvements. Speaking of which, Safari has yet again received tweaks and here we hugely welcome the change Apple has done.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the update, let’s say that the update weighs 760.9 MB on our 2020 iPhone SE. Head over to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the new build provided you have signed up and installed the iOS 15 Public Beta on your iPhone.

The official release notes for iOS 15 Beta 6 are here.

    Safari gets reworked again

Ever since Apple outed the first beta of iOS 15, Safari has faced a lot of criticism for its controversial UI overhaul. The address bar was shifted to the bottom of the screen and was given the floating treatment. In the sixth beta, Apple has finally given users the choice to revert to the good old and inoffensive pre-iOS 15 Safari top address bar and bottom navigation panel layout.

You can tap the Aa button in the address bar and switch to a top address bar or bottom address bar layout. Alternatively, the very same option is available in Settings > Safari. When the bottom address bar option is selected, the address bar no longer floats and is instead fixed in place along with the navigation panel at the bottom of the screen.

On that note, the in-browser video playback issue of the previous beta has been resolved in this beta release.

The iOS 14 Safari top address bar layout is back! The bottom floating address bar is gone for good. We like the tweaked setup with bookmarks and navigation buttons below the bar Tap the “Aa” to switch back and forth between the top and bottom bar layout The top bar options.

SharePlay is disabled and will be available sometime later

The ability to share the content you are watching to other Apple devices via FaceTime all in perfect sync is one of the many highlighting features of iOS 15. However, starting the sixth beta of iOS 15, Apple has decided to remove SharePlay until sometime later in the fall. And yes, it won’t be available in the official rollout of iOS 15 next month. Future releases of iOS will bring SharePlay back into action.

  • New FaceTime and iMessage features
  • Tweaked notification system
  • Enhancements to Photos and more
  • Apple unveiled iOS 15 at the June 7 WWDC21 event. The next-generation update brings with it changes and new features to FaceTime, Messages, Maps, Photos, and notifications system. Without further ado, let’s jump to some of the key features announced in the keynote.

    Source: Apple 1. iOS 15: A no-risk update! 2. iPadOS 15: Evolutionary!

    iOS 15: A no-risk update!

    Source: Apple

Apple started off the event with new features built into FaceTime. First, spatial Audio makes its way to FaceTime call for a natural life-like audiovisual experience. Then we have a voice isolation feature that allows you to shun background noise and puts a priority on your voice for a clearer calling experience.

Group Fcaeome call gets a new Grid view which organizes callers in equal-sized tiles and also highlights the tile corresponding to the person speaking on a call. To elevate the call experience, Fcattime now brings portrait mode to calls, neat! The SharePlay feature allows you to share music or video with others in an active call exactly like how you would watch on your device.

Collage view is now available for a bunch of photos shared in a message. The new Shared with You feature enables you to view say an article or playlist your friend sent you on iMessage later while browsing Safari or navigating through the Apple Music app. The items will be available in a section called shared with You within the corresponding app.

    • Tweaked notification system

    Source: Apple

As part of Apple’s new vision to keep things in focus, a new notification system is here. App icons and contact photos in notifications are now prominent and easily graspable. To avoid piling of notifications over time and keep important ones in check, we now have a Notifications Summary. As the name suggests, all of the notifications are stacked in this category that to based on priority.

And of course, messages and conversations do not end up in the Notifications Summary and are always available right at the front in the Notification Center. A new Focus mode as part of the Do Not Disturb mode gives options to switch to modes such as personal, work, sleep or the usual D Not Disturb and helps keep you in focus as per preference.

Fire up the Camera app and point your iPhone camera to anything that has text in it. Next, copy and send it to anybody for a better communicating experience. This also works in the Photos app where you can select texts or phone numbers in any picture and take required actions.

You can now search for photos directly in Spotlight right from your home screen. To make things better, SpotLight will show texts in pictures right in the search.

A driving License can now be added in the Wallet app provided that your country and its states support the feature. Also new is digital keys for your home to seamlessly enter and exit your home.

New layout that changes according to the weather conditions to better understand the details. Brand new animations and graphics for intricate weather condition details and time of the day. A full weather map now gets a better representation of the conditions.

    Source: Apple

New detailed 3D view to better navigate the city. Driving mode now gets a revamped view to judge traffic and flyovers in a very eye-catching manner for a safer navigating experience. There’s also the use of AR to better assist frim being lost out.

    iPadOS 15: Evolutionary!

    Source: Apple

Along with iOS 15, Apple also debuted iPadOS 15. We feel this update is noting but for an interactive upgrade over iOS 14. Key changes include placement of widgets anywhere on the home screen, split-view multitasking better Safari tabs, Quick Note, and Shelf.

The brand new Shelf feature helps minimize apps and access them within any apps seamlessly while Quick Note allows you to jit down notes by swiping from the bottom corner of the screen. And by the way, App Library makes its way to iPadOS from iOS.

    Availability

The beta of iOS and iPadOS 15 rolls out today for developers with public beta testing to start in July. iOS 15 is compatible with iPhone 6S and later. iPadOS 15 supports every iPad Pro 12.9″ and iPad 11″ models, iPad Pro 10.5″ and iPad Pro 9.7″, iPad Air (2nd gen and later), and vanilla iPad (5th gen and later). Last week Apple released iOS 15 Beta 5 to Developer Beta users and public testers. Over the week we have been using the same and so far things have been smooth and sound. Performance and battery life have been dramatically improved compared to previous beta versions.

However, to make things bitter, a very annoying bug has plagued iOS 15 Beta 5. In-browser videos in Safari fail to display with only audio being played. To make things worse, the issue is not limited to Safari but to every other web browser, we played a video in.

At first, we thought the issue is related to the Youtube website but things are all the same on other websites with embedded videos.

There are no visuals with only the audio being played here.

As part of thorough testing, we fired the Youtube app to see if the problem persists in video apps. Thankfully, things are all good in Youtube app along with video streaming apps. As far as we can understand, there is really no workaround with the only option being is to wait for the next beta release.

    Safari

The new address bar in Safari has been the most criticized element ever since iOS 15 was introduced. The floating address bar at the bottom of the page annoyed a lot of users over time. In Beta 3, the floating bar remains, however, Apple has tweaked it ever so slightly by attaching the same to the keyboard while say typing a web address or performing a search.

The refresh button is now available right in the address in addition to it being hidden behind the three-dot button. Speaking of which, a long-press on the address bar also brings up the reload option among others.

New iPhone Reset menu and a bonus!

The Reset option in Settings > General has now been revamped. It now has been renamed to Transfer or Reset iPhone. Meaning, to reset your iPhone, you have to go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone from now on.  Here, you will be able to transfer your data from the existing iPhone to a brand new one right away. Remember the bonus we mentioned earlier? well, now Apple offers free unlimited iCloud storage when you transfer new data to your new iPhone.

The old iPhone data gets backed up to iCloud regardless of the size and the same can be downloaded to your new iPhone. However, keep in mind that the data transfer should be completed within 21 days before it gets deleted and your storage plan reverts to its original value. As part of generosity, Apple will allow you to request additional time to complete the data transfer process.

And yes, the Reset option is available at the bottom of the menu where you can reset all settings or just reset the network, keyboard, home screen, and location settings. The ability to reset and erase your iPhone is also available right here.

    New App Store splash screen

Post the installation of the iOS 15 Public Beta 3, head over to the App Store. Now, you’ll be greeted with a new splash screen that highlights iOS 15-specific features that are available in the App Store such as in-app events within apps and games, Safari extensions, and a new App Store widget.

As part of the newly introduced iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Apple finally and rather quietly brought back the magnifying glass for text selection in the software update. Yes, that sensible little way to move the cursor around text-rich content that vanished since iOS 13. The feature took a two-year hiatus. However, in comparison to the pre-iOS 13 days, the magnification here appears to be smaller.

Nevertheless, it is better than nothing at all. In a rather bizarre move, Apple with the release of iOS 13 decided to quietly remove this very useful feature. Since then, text selection was a chore and often our thumb blocked the whole text we were trying to select.

Apple has listed the magnifying glass feature in the feature list for iOS 15 on their website.

iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 are now currently in their early stages of release. The first Developer Beta was out to developers right after the WWDC21 event. However, you can still download and install iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Developer Beta even without a developer account.

The Public Beta will release in July. Anyways, do keep in mind that Apple may or may not include this feature in future builds. However, since users will definitely appreciate the feature comeback, we find no reason for Apple to not include it in the final version of iOS 15 this fall.
